Biostar nurtures growth, banners Filipino ingenuity with Meralco Biz
Biostar NutriProducts, Inc., a Laguna-based manufacturer, distributor, and importer of veterinary and nutritional products for swine and poultry, has consistently set new standards in nutritional science.
Founded by Diosdado Serviento in 2005, the company specializes in the production of probiotics. This move was in response to the European ban on animal antibiotics that aimed to lower the possibility of antibiotic resistance in humans. As a result, Biostar’s innovative shift promoted a natural and effective alternative to animal nutrition that Filipino consumers also benefit from. Currently fulfilling the growing national demand, Biostar is the first registered probiotic company in the Philippines that thrives with a group of all-Filipino scientists.
Supporting Biostar’s goals for innovation and growth, Meralco Biz , the Meralco segment that caters to businesses with a power demand of 5 to 499 kilowatts, collaborated during the planning stage of the company’s first poultry broiler building, probiotics plant, and layering building. The partnership began with a Power Consult where the Meralco Biz team assessed the location to ensure the availability of Meralco facilities and equipment to match the business’ power requirements. This led to the timely energization of Biostar’s facilities and the efficient use of automated technologies, allowing them to meet customer demand.
“We wanted to grow our business, and we wouldn’t be able to achieve this without the help of Meralco,” said Biostar President and Chief Executive Officer Diosdado Serviento. “When we were building our first plant in 2017, we consulted Meralco, and they assisted us immediately. Because of that, our operations have also become very efficient as we were able to automate our plant and meet our customers’ demands.”
Investing in efficient solutions
As the business grew, Biostar also achieved its goal of investing in renewable energy as part of its push for more cost-efficient operations. To install solar panels in their facilities and lower their electricity bills, the company partnered with MSpectrum , a solar power company built with Meralco's energy expertise and service standards.
Biostar also enrolled in the Meralco Net-Metering program, an energy solution that ensures the safe installation and operation of solar panels while allowing customers to earn bill credits for the excess energy exported to Meralco.
Reaping the benefits of MSpectrum’s installation and the Net-Metering program, the company yielded an annual savings of P400,000 from their 25-kWp solar panels in their broiler building. Biostar, convinced of the significant cost-saving potential of solar energy, also installed a 50-kWp solar system at their probiotics plant, with an anticipated annual savings of over P500,000.
